sold my FT950. fancied some hi band stuff. took some time to choose. vr5000 .. ar8600 ???? even considered the r8500 icom. in the end i decided to give the AR8600 a try.
well i didnt buy it for longwave. in the manual it doesnt say much except .. its not guaranteed. and a review online had the same comment.
----
well heres my test. its not a special radio. just one bought from a local shop off the shelf. i think its great.
and the hi bands??? fantastic. it stands up to my stringent tests from past experiences. airband vhf is very good. 200mhz is good. pmr uhf and even 850mhz where ive listened to our headphone fqy,s
the audio is rounded and solid. no nasty edgy sharp sounding. AM bands are very pleasant to listen to.
oh .. one thing i didnt like ... the bandscope. id rather a fast tune button.

  • That is good that you choose the AOR instead of Yaesu VR5000, maybe VR 5000 got a fancy display, but AOR is AOR - Authority On Radio..king of receivers and scanner..73 de YU2SRB from Serbia

  • the reviews did influence me. as u said .. the Yaesu display is very nice .. but i worried about inter-mod. the AR8600 is quite good on all bands i think. it outperforms my R20.

my opinion ... (using the same aerial)

it lacks slow/fast tune and the bandscope is useless. i would have liked a better tuning knob and fast speed tuning.

  • And you are going to teach me about comunications...right?

No man, you are wrong. For receivers AOR brand is far better than Yaesu, maybe even better than Icom. What is inside is what's matter..but you know that. You are right that if you connect the HF outside antenna on every receiver you are going to get overload..somewhere more -somewhere less.

  • @lamarabialardi Only someone who knows nothing about communications recievers would make a comment like that!

Aor radios are nowhere near the best. Connect even a simple outside HF antenna to that radio and watch it shit itself! Full strength noise and overload on every band even with the attenuator on. The VR-5000 also has its problems but FAR less than the AR8600Mk2 on HF. The bandscope on the VR5000 is the best in that class of radio. The one on AR8600 is just a waist of space.

  • CI HO MESSO 20 ANNI PER CAPIRE QUANTO BENE FUNZIONINO GLI APPARATI AOR: ho preso l'anno scorso un vecchissimo ma perfetto 2800, e non lo cambierei per nessun motivo con ricevitori come R-100 o Kenwood RZ-1

  • I'd love to have one of those.

  • Very very Good!!!

    Super!!!

  • these rigs always were good years ago. picks up the signals just find. great looking rig
