Traffic deaths on Missouri highways declined for the sixth straight year, making the drop in fatalities the top news story of 2011. Highway deaths have decreased every year since 2005 and are expected to fall below 800 in 2011, the lowest they've been since 1949. Other transportation events that made statewide news include MoDOT's efforts to decrease staff, facilities and equipment to direct more funding toward needed road and bridge projects and a record snow in February that closed Interstate 70 for the first time in history. MoDOT has launched a smartphone application that lets users check state road conditions from the palm of their hands. The Traveler Information Map App, which is available at both the iPhone App Store and Android Marketplace, offers the latest information on road conditions, work zones, flooding and incidents.
