simple, man has evolved to be curious and to recieve pleasure from understanding, these traits elevated us, gave us tool usage, which gave us the free time to sit around fires and make up myths and gods to try to explain bigger things. Finally we're of an age where we're making amazing breakthroughs in true knowledge and we can get rid of all the junk ideas fables and myths. That we have access to true answers finally is beautiful, it invokes wonder it fulfills an ingrained need.

even more beautiful when you realize that neither he nor you can explain what makes any of it beautiful.

Yeah he is. It's his actual love of nature that really sets him apart. That childlike look of wonder he gets in his eyes when he's looking at a snowy owl or a stick insect. It becomes contageous. Hearing him actually lecture on biology is great. It's so annoying that he has to take time away from his passion to keep the old blood letters from crushing his field of study.
