There was a lot of positive response to the first Harry James clip that I posted, so I am happy to share the second instrumental piece from the 1950 Cavalcade of Bands telecast. The tune, Big John Special, was composed and arranged by Horace Henderson for Benny Goodman in 1938. Chuck Par-Due, a collector of all things James, noted, "In 1950, Harry commissioned Ray Conniff, who by then was a major staff arranger for the band, to write new arrangements of some of the tunes Harry had played with Benny Goodman." This is Conniff's arrangement of Big John Special, based on Henderson's original, featuring solos by Harry and tenor sax Corky Corcoran.
