A walk through the engine room of an EMD 645 turbo locomotive. Starts off at low idle, goes to normal idle speed and briefly in to notch 2 as it heads off out of the depot.

  • I thought the air compressor would be a shite load bigger than that. Why is there a Qld Rail sticker on the wall?

  • @bolts1111 I don't know why the sticker is there. It was a PN loco........maybe somebody being or attempting to be funny.

  • Search for this video on youtube: Loco 66542 cold start attempt 3

It has the silencer removed!!! Always wanted to know what they sounded like unsilenced :)

  • @ZetanCrisp Pretty much like an SD40 or one of our old Victorian GT26C C class units.

  • @NewJerseyBill...

Hey thanks for the reply, I think it's a fascinating piece of engineering. Even tho I understand engines these beasts have made me realise how little I really understood, fascinating. I'd love to see a diagram of the internals, anybody know of some diagrams on the interweb...?

  • @mckerraljamie Took me all of 5 seconds but YT will not allow a link in this box so just search EMD 567 engine and you will find one. The bigger engines are basically the same but......bigger as in 654 or 710 cubic inches per cylinder

  • I'm pretty sure that's a 16 cylinder you got there (bit hard counting the cylinder covers), I know the UK 66s are 12 cylinder, 710 series engines (710 cubic inch per cylinder). I believe the 16/645s are about the same HP (around 3300) as the 12/710s which are later technology with electronic fuel injection etc.

The new SD 70s they've just bought in the Pilbara are 16/710 series EMDs, about 4500 HP a guy that drives one told me.

I'm no expert, so correct me if I'm wrong.

  • they are driven by engine crank via spring loaded turbo drive gear until it reaches proper RPM and exhaust pressure. Then it is driven only by exhaust pressure. It is really a turbo and supercharger in one. They really are a cool engine.

  • sounds totally different from outside.

  • damn, that alternator is huge!!!

  • @bolts1111 laughing, yes its real. Changed out a couple in my locomotive mechanic days. Not sure how big your case of beer is... but a standard US 12 pack will fit through the exhaust inlet side of the turbocharger.

Crankshaft alone is 3 to 4 tons depending on how many cylinders the prime mover has. That usually blows peoples minds more than the 1 ton turbocharger. :)

  • @dodgeramb59 Are you for real? Thats a bit over a tonne! It only looks to be the size of a carton of beer?

  • @gm16v149 You're correct, the UK 66's are 12 cylinder, the EMD 16 cylinder engine in the video is the same as the UK 59's.
