This is a quick and easy way to model a flat object using a photographic reference. I picked up this technique a few years ago when I needed to model a huge number of background objects but didn't have any time to do it in.
The principle is simple, we take a photograph, model with some very low budget polys onto that photograph and then project the texture onto the model. The effect ranges from simplistic to occasionally astonishing, with time and patience it can even be used for objects in the foreground depending on your requirements.
Give it an experiment, take your time and you'll quickly work out what situations it works best in.
