This is the intro to Megami Tensei (MSX). This about has to be the worst of the MSX intros ever created because all you get is the Japanese Megami Tensei logo, some background music that last for a minute... and eventually, you get to see a small screen of a labyrinth tinted in red light. Then, it scrolls from right to left.

You may note that this was not made by Atlus or Namco, but by Telenet in 1987. It plays more like a terrible version of Gauntlet, and so don't waste your time with it. In fact, you're better off playing Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga (1 and 2), and Persona 3 FES or something.

  • whats MSX, and what does it stand for?

  • @Legomakerx MSX is a Japanese home computer system that was available in the mid to late 1980s. You mainly played games on it, like Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. And this as well.

  • The game was originally release by a company named Namcot for the Super Famicom.

Nocturne was the next installment in this particular series after Digital Devil Story II.

Persona is great, one of my favourite games, but I like this game.

It gives you the most freedom and was actually really good on the Famicom.

I feel like they should bring more elements in from this game to their current works.

  • Unless ur talking about Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei for the SNES, which Atlus acknowledges Namco (or Namcot as it's also known as), Namco didn't release the first game for the SNES. You're talking about Shin Megami Tensei released by Atlus itself. Nocturne came out after Shin Megami Tensei II for the SNES, which was about a decade later.

  • @Snake6782 Actually I heard the original game was made by Namco(Namcot back then) for the Famicom and a port of sorts by Telenet Japan, with less RPG features, was released on the MSX.

  • @Dharoz Makes sense. I did try the game after I recorded the intro, and I regretted it since though because it wasn't that great, which is why I preferred Namco/Atlus' takes on the series over the past couple of decades.

  • @Dharoz Oh.. I didn't know they bought the rights. Hm... this makes me scratch my head at all the references to Nakajima and Yumiko in Nocturne. (though it was subtle).

  • @MagatsutheCalamity I think you are right, though Namco did buy the Video Game Rights to the novel the first games are based upon(back then), so they not only were the Publishers, but the Producers as well.

  • @Dharoz Developer listed on Wiki says Atlus. Namco only published it.

  • @Legomakerx Micro Soft Extended

  • @Dharoz

Megami Tensei I and II came out for the original NES/Famicom and were both published by Namco, but still developed by Atlus. Shin Megami Tensei I and II came out on SNES/Super Famicom, and were developed and published by Atlus. Nocturne/SMT III came out a decade after SMT II for the PS2.

Adding to the confusion, there have been multiple ports and rereleases of the older games. Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei, the SNES release of Megami Tensei 1+2, the PS1 versions of SMT1+2, etc

  • After 0:17 I like "Whut, 8 Bit of Creepiness"
