Two (and a bit) hauntingly, beautiful songs from two of the best female musical artists. I first heard this mash (which was an edited down version of the two songs) by robbjmc, then seemed to forget about it. The other day I came across it again, this time by floridaoj1, and hearing this rekindled my interest in doing something with it. Subsequently I have created my own audio mash using the full versions of the songs, and put it together with some (sympathetic) Kate & Tori video footage.

When rainy nights are soft with tears,
And Autumn leaves are falling,

See you over hill and dale

I hear his voice on tumbling waves
And no one there to hold me.

Riding on the wind I see

At evening's fall he watched me walk.
His heart was mine.
But my love was young, and felt
The world was not cruel, but kind.

You know me, you know me like the nightingale

Where Lagan's light fell on the hour,
I saw him far below me--
Just as the morning calmed the storm--
With no one there to hold him.

Oh fair maiden, I see you standing there
Will you hold me for just a fair time
The tune is playing in the fair night

My loves have come, my loves have gone,
And nothing's left to warn me,
Save for a voice on the travelling wind,
And the glimpse of a face at morning.

I see you in my dreams
Fair boy your eyes haunt me...

  • the rape ordeal most certainly played a big part in it. i did not know about the RAINN thing though.

i agree with you totally, but still find it a hard listen/watch.

  • @kate4ever1 I think RAINN stands for Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network and is a manned telephone service in the US set up to help victims of sexual assault. Tori wrote a song on her first album about her rape called Me And A Gun, that's a pretty harrowing listen too! Personally I prefer her ballads like Winter, 10,000 Oceans, & Gold Dust etc and her "kookier" numbers like Cornflake Girl too, but the tough stuff definitely has a place in her repertoire imo.

  • @vibesinthesky I saw Tori Amos at the royal festival hall in london some years ago, she did a totally acapella version of me and a gun, almost virtually in the dark. It was one of the most humbling and moving moments of my life. Kate and Tori are my eternal musical companions. I thank them both.

  • @stinkwheel Pity you didn't film it, I bet it was spectacular!

  • you ever seen the tory amos precious things RAINN video on here?

now thats just strange. very public emotional outburst. (from around half way on)

    take a look.

  • @kate4ever1 I think Precious Things must have some emotional resonance for her due to her rape ordeal, and the fact she was performing it at RAINN which I believe is a foundation Tori set up for rape victims, probably tipped her over the edge a bit while singing "wash me clean". I love it when an artist is able to "live" their art during a live performance, although it does not make for easy listening. Nevertheless, I like just about all Tori's work, especially the early to middle years stuff.
