His voice is way too throaty.

The movie of "On the Town" is just an excuse for dancing(well Gene Kelly was a director along with Stanley Donen) and it seems they felt the songs help up the action!
So they dropped quite a few of them, cut out Bernstein's underscoring;this was replaced by new underscore etc by Roger Edens(not a bad composer in his own right). To add insult to injury Edens got he Oscar for Best Score!
So the movie bears no real resemblance to the stage musical.
It was always a sore point with Lenny.

Agreed. There's an exaggerated diction to his performance that comes across as false in the context of this song, and for me dampens the emotional impact of his otherwise fantastic singing.

stuart foster sang it great with alfredo antonini and the cbs orchestra on a special wcbs radio show when mr. paley controlled the quality of cbs radio and cbs local stations owned by cbs. have on take from about 1965.

we're playing this for our show this year. it's alright I guess, the chorale at around 4:10ish is pretty :)

Watch the video of him singing Largo al Factotum (the one where he is wearing a tailsuit). If you still think so then I guess it is just your opinion.

Extraordinary show...brilliant score...and Hampson perfect as Gaby...makes the original Sinatra movie a travesty...
I watched the movie and was upset that this song was not included. While watching it there were so many good points in which this song could have been sung. But I agree with everyone Thomas Hampson is just amazing. No matter what he sings he is great. The definition of a performer.

You're right, the movie was just a shell of the stage show. Most of the music was deleted. Bernstein didn't want to even be associated with the movie.
Hampson is great with this song.
