A hajhooj/gombri is a north African instrument that's traditionally made of hollow wood base, long wooden unfretted neck, and animal gut strings (sorry animal lovers...). It's considered the original bass instrument. Traditionally, the instrument is played in ethnic groups in Morocco (ie Gnawa), Mauritania, Tunisia, & Algeria. Modern musicians such as Hassan Hakmoun & others can also be seen on YouTube
The instrument that Najib is playing is a modern fusion (his original design) with large framedrum base & guitar neck. The strings are still gut. It is usually strummed like a bass guitar and percussed like a drum....
