God, I wonder if they were influenced by 'Its the end of the world...' when writing/recording this track. Peter's chord and rhythm sequence in particular is very much in keeping with the style of that song. Great song! Cant wait for the new album.

@mysolitarystar Actually, I think Bad Day influenced It's the End of the World As We Know It. Bad Day was written in the 80s and a demo track was recorded under the name P.S.A. It uses the drum intro from End of the World and the bass plays this guitar riff. Then it somehow became End of the World and this version was released in 2003. There's an upload of P.S.A. somewhere on youtube, I think the video is called Bad Day Outtake Version or something.

@SW2395 Really wow! I love REM, I have every album, but until now I had thought Bad Day was post millenium work. Thanks for telling me that, its really appreciated. Ill have a look for the Outtake.
