  • Great video, Deb. Please describe your equipment. I have been lucky to view two nests in two years. You can see my results with a Panasonic SDR-S26 camcorder with 70x optical zoom at "2009 Pileated Woodpecker Nest". I don't have it in HD, but I guess they still can't go much above 20x optical in HD yet. PWPs spook so easily.

  • @OrinK3 This was shot with an old Sony Handy Cam. It's an antique! This tree is right in our backyard and the footage is around 6 years old. The tree is still standing and every year we see the PWP come back and usually roost in it, but not nest. We've also seen owls, squirrels, woodducks, and flickers in the hole. It's always exciting to see the PWP!

  • Fantastic footage. Did you have to climb a tree across from it to get this film? Just amazing. They look like something designed by hollywood -- just so surreal -- but incredibly beautiful. Thanks for posting this!

  • The hole was facing our yard so I had a really good shot. I just hid behind another tree so I wouldn't spook them!

  • What state do you live in? We have these in our back yard in Indiana but I've never seen a nest or babies.

  • We live in northeast CT. That hole is in a dead white pine trunk about 30' from the ground.
