Three Japanese proverbs about food:
Hana yori dango - Food over Flowers
E ni Kaita Mochi - Can't eat a painted cake
Bushi wa kuwanedo taka youji - Even if a samurai hasn't eaten he holds his toothpick high.

  • The samurai one means that even when you are poor, you still act as if you are rich just like if a samurai will pretend that he ate a feast (holding the toothpick high) even if he actually didn't. The rice cake proverb is that no matter how good fantasy or dream is (how good a drawn rice cake looks), it is not real or not as good as a real version.

  • The similar meaning in other phrase.

    "鷹は 飢えても [死すとも] 穂を摘まず"

    taka wa ue-temo [shisu-tomo] ho wo tsumazu

    = Even if the hawk starves [is dying], he doesn't pick up an ear of rice (unlike a sparrow or a crow).

    = the noble-minded person controls himself (keeps his mind) not to do wrong thing, when if in hardships.
