1929 Thew-Lorain Model 75 Shovel.

Close up of the levers. Note the foot crowd pedal on the crowd lever. Operator only needs to use the crowd lever for rehaul when needed. There is no crowd brake, the crowd is held by feathering the huge clutch on the crowd drum..

It really looks like a workout.

Has a Waukesha gasser, only 4 cylinders, but 980+ CID!

National Pike show, Brownsville PA, May 17, 2009.

Owner found it on a farm near the show, where it had been used to strip mine coal during the winter months when the farm was idle. Hadn't been run in 20+ years, owner freed it up + changed the oil, and that's it.

  • The stick that the bucket is mounted on, often called the dipper stick, can slide in + out. Sliding it out to push the bucket into the bank is "crowd", pulling it back is often called "rehaul".

The hoist cables tend to pull back on the crowd, requiring a brake.

Crowd on this one is rack + pinion, on Northwests + others it's cables to crowd + rehaul. Many Northwests run the end of the hoist cable over the upper crowd sheave, to increase crowd force, the reason they are good rock shovels.

  • I'm sorry but...what's a crowd? And why would it need a brake?

  • @hollywood1340 Tried to respond, ended up as a general comment. Take a look.

  • Looks like a short person would have a lot of trouble running that shovel.

  • Now that's a real workout. And guys today think they have it rough when their excavators don't have AC.
