Samuel S. Beard Award for Greatest Public Service by an Individual 35 or Under
In 2000, while a sophomore at Yale University, Jennifer Staple founded Unite for Sight from her dorm room to bring quality eye care to underserved people throughout the world. Today her organization which unites doctors, nurses, students, and other people, across borders, across economic status, and across professional lines has mushroomed into a worldwide staff of volunteers who help to both educate and inform the public about eye issues, and restore sight to the needy. She has developed a highly successful volunteer training program, created 90 chapters throughout North America, and developed international programs that provide sightrestoring eye care to more than 200,000 people annually in Africa and Asia. In addition, she coordinates an annual global health conference that convenes more than 2,200 participants from 60 countries. Since 2004, more than 5,700 volunteers have been trained by "Unite For Sight" and provide eye care services to more than 800,000 people worldwide.
