Jericho is a town in the West Bank, located within the Jericho Governorate, near the Jordan River.
Believed to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, archaeologists have unearthed the remains of over 20 successive settlements there, dating back to 8000 BCE. Jericho has a population of approximately 25,000 Palestinians.

Jericho is mentioned in the Jewish Hebrew Bible (the Christian Old Testament), over 70 times. Jericho is also mentioned several times in the New Testament books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and Hebrews.

The summit of Mount of Temptation, rising to a height of 350 meters above sea level and commanding a magnificent and panoramic view of the Jordan Valley, is the site where Jesus spent forty days and forty nights fasting and meditating during the temptation of Satan, about 3 km northwest of Jericho.

A Greek Orthodox monastery was built in the 6th century over the cave where Christ stayed.

  • yes i knew about jordan's relinquishment of the west bak in 88 prior to the run up to the oslo accords/jordanian-israeli peace treaty, and of the history prior. just a tad confused about jericho thanks. I traveled al over Israel too a few years back but hadnt gone into the west bank. Did you go elsewhere in the wb? Bethlehem? Hebron? Mt Gerizim?

  • I went in Bethlehem, Jerico, and another little village near Jerusalem, where is located the Church of Emmaus. I don't remember the name...

  • ok so its under pna control then, i had been a bit confused by it because i thought israel had once annexed jericho and held control even past the end of negotiations following the six day war. many orthodox third temple types talk of jericho alot. but i think it has definitely been handed over to the pna?

  • The West Bank was captured and annexed by Jordan, during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and the 1949 Armistice Agreements defined its interim boundary. From 1948 until 1967, the area was under Jordanian rule, though Jordan did not officially relinquish its claim to the area until 1988. It was captured by Israel after a Jordanian attack during the Six-Day War. With the exception of East Jerusalem, it was not annexed by Israel.

  • this is israeli owned or palestian territory?

  • This is Cisjordan and it was not annexed by Israel.

The West Bank is currently considered under international law to be de jure a territory not part of any state.
