Danny C. and friends, in K.C.. It is this author's qualified, considered opinion, that performances of standards, when adaptated in unique ways, by underrated, struggling - yet well-received - artists, and for voluntary donation - is not only unpreventable; not violating anything; but also gives positive publicity to the original writers. Such was the case when Steve Tyler, after being pleased with the early part of Danny C.'s round-sounding solo adaptation of "Dream On," when he happened through the Plaza in 2002(Danny had been warned he was coming up the street by a crowd member who suggested Danny then play some Aerosmith), during a street performance by Danny there. Tyler was so complimented by the classic guitar/vocal arrangement, that, when urged by Danny, took over mid-song on vocal, to Danny's accompaniment, for the latter part of the performance, Tyler singing into the set-up microphone. He also stuck around adding background harmony for Danny's rockabilly-for-solo adaptation of "What Goes On?"; then for formal introduction/conversation with Danny (after the fact (of song performances)).(in case any readers are now-wondering, on night of the chance meeting, no video gear was in tow, of course, as Murphy's Law dictated-ha!. As I recall it was a week night, during a slow week in general, the kind which in order to make any kind of a night in tips at all, no packing and/or setting up of video equipment was feasible. Danny didn't own a still camera at the time, either. Mr. Tyler's being there was totally unexpected, until seconds before he & his entourage approached the gathering). This collage is a combination of excerpts, standards and an original. The performances were at home; at a Coffee Shop Gig (that particular outing appropriately was about half original, with sample of one here); at a tavern gig at Snafu Bar & Grill(note the appropriate choice of country and blues standard adaptations opted for in that footage-a gig livened up immensely in its latter half, incidentally, and, of course, the cam batteries were fried by that point of the night & cam's a.c. adapter was toast); and, finally, Plaza street performance footage excerpt (for the decent renderng of adaptation of Rhymin' S.'s tune). As for the piano break of an original (at a Gee Coffee House gig), it has been purposely kept short, as that is how Danny prefers some of his originals samples be posted. The tune is registered in D.C. at Library Of Congress, rights reserved, but to lessen the need to fight people over individual lines that tend to get lifted off Danny's songs, (sometimes ending up in songs that become hits for other hick-types), hence, at this juncture, with too little backing, for now, he prefers to not leave those lines out there for the taking on certain works. This is true after having learned the hard way with other songs played on song writer nights, earler in his career, that such things go on. As yet, not having the luxury of the kind of financial backing it would take to have it adequately distributed right out of the gate, but wanting to show a glimpse of it here, nonetheless. The melody of the bridge, of said tune, is also very prolific. In the currently practiced system, it is difficult to prevent individual lines from being ripped off. Danny is an advocate of more challenges of that status quo, in which the wrong people have thus far been getting credit. What's even worse is that some of those same wrong-doing companies are then low enough to harass someone for "the equivalent of singing in the shower." Juke boxes are afforded more respect and freedom than struggling acts, especially solo performer/song writers outside the good old boy clique. Eventually Danny hopes to lead the charge to shake up courtrooms & see it be more common to see law suits returning rightful credit for individual lines stolen from the previously victimized, occur. He has some ideas on how to strengthen the chances of this happening within the courts. To where, eventually, cases of the old "let's hear what you got," followed by, "and just trust me," goings-on, by record companies, are all but eliminated. No more of the prevailing practice, in place now, where the record companies have everything to gain & the artist everything to lose by sending them material or playing something in their presence. On the "Wear Y. Love.." version excerpts, the key board work was played by Danny, taped to cassette audio, played back & sang along with for the video, which is the closest thing to karaoke he'll ever be caught dead having any part of.
