This video will guide you in the replacement of the hard drive on a Apple 17" Pre-iSight iMac G5 Computer. Once the hard drive is replaced you will need to format the drive by going to the disk utility and formatting the drive as Mac OSx Journaled, if it is to be your bootable drive. You will also need to transfer your old data, if desired. This video was edited and produced on the same iMac, after having it's hard drive replaced. ***NOTE*** If you have the Apple Logo with the spinning wheel, you may be able to repair your hard drive by trying the following steps.

1) insert OS X install DVD before restart.

2) restart Mac while holding C down to boot up with optical drive.

3) Choose preferred language on menu then on next page, go for "utility - disc utility" on top menu bar.

4) in Disc Utility, choose First Aid - Repair Disc (then just let it run. if something's wrong, it'll repair it)

5) Repair Permissions (again, just let it run.)

If repair is successful, then may just restart and see if it boots up. If not, try reinstalling your software to the hard drive and if you have time machine and it has got the latest backup, then just go ahead to reinstall OS X and restore from time machine on the OS X DVD screen menu.

Otherwise, replace the hard drive and follow the steps in this video.

  • Great video, thanks. any info on removing a stuck cd? g5 is trying to eject but there is a mechanical interference.

  • @flxibl2008 Nothing that I have experienced. These Macs are easy to get in to, so you may just have to open it up and see if you can get to it. Probably going to need to replace the drive to avoid it happening again. Turning them on and off with the eject key sometimes works, but if it's is something mechanical, that most likely will not help. Maybe someone else will have a response for you.

  • Thank you. I knew I had to do something with the 3 screws on the bottom but when they weren't coming out the way most screws would I started to wonder. Thanks for the video.

  • @Tenorsax69er Glad that it helped.

  • Or Just Get AllThingsTech Ebay Service to do it. Item Number: 270785988239 They use The Best Hard Drives

  • That is a long way off to send to have a hard drive replaced if you live in the states.

  • Very informative and comes in handy just as I find I need to replace my hard drive. One quick question: do you remember what brand of hard drive you used to replace the original?

If I go to my local computer store what do I ask for? Serial ATA drive?

    Any help much appreciated.
