At the time this interview RF was writing a good deal for magazines about music and the alleged music business, so his espousing to operate as a "small intelligent unit" is core to his development through the Drive to 1981, and King Crimson (Discipline)... Let the Power Fall had just come out, evidenced by the poster. Ooh I wish I had that poster, eh?
