To all BandPagers - this is a great discussion that we often have in our own office! In the digital age, it seems easier to copy music material, but this has really always been an issue. We remember making mixtapes tapes from radio broadcasts back in the day ourselves ;). That being said, we love to hear from you guys and gals! If you have concerns about this issue, or possible solutions we could look at, email us at info @ rootmusic . com and we'll start talking.
I tried Myspace. I cannot download their streams without physically reconnecting my soundcard's output. On my own page, vocalfons . com, page "projects", I used a flash applet as well. Now do try to download these files. ..Well? Rootmusic should do it this way as well. I just realise it's just a matter of time before big artists find out their material can be downloaded for free with BandPage. There will be very interesting lawsuits....
@vocalfons If there was a more secure way to offer your music that wasn't inconvenient for bands to set up or fans to access we would totally do it. For now, we'll leave you with this article which goes much more in-depth in to the issue than we can hope to address in this format :) newmusicstrategies . com/2008/04/03/should-i-be-worried-about-piracy/
I would love to get my music to everyone-but not for free! I support creative commons, and I love open source. But after so many years of Napster, Kazaa, Bittorrent and other freeloading services, there still isn't an aternative way for musicians to make money with their music.
The least Rootmusic could do, is warn about the vulnerability of the uploaded music
@vocalfons BandPage supports artists getting royalties paid out if they use YouTube tracks - you can learn more in the YouTube 'partner' section. New methods such as this are being invented every day to tackle the very problem you are experiencing with piracy services. I'm sorry you've had such bad experiences with music moochers in the past :(. The systems now may not be perfect but we are interested in seeing how to make things better for artists... just takes some time and effort :)
Bandpage is a good idea badly inplemented: your tracks will be downloadable by anyone FOR FREE!!
BandPage requires you to upload your tracks to SoundCloud, from which anyone can download them with Firefox and Downloadhelper. Unless you want to give your music away for free, do not join!!
@vocalfons You have a valid point about the possibility of 'free' downloads. This has been and will continue to be a problem with all streaming providers, not just BandPage. YouTube, BandCamp, Myspace, whatever - all of these services that offer streaming can be taken advantage of by somebody with the motivation and know-how. BandPage was made to serve musicians, and we felt musicians were far greater served by getting their music out to fans quickly and easily through free streams than by not.
