  • Hi guys - i have recently purchased 2 of these guys. I am trying to keep the water soft and clean but i could do with some experienced help. Can anyone give me a few pointers about keeping them happy and alive. I have a 25 gallon tank. 6 cardinal tetras and 2 bristlenose as tank mates. Melbourne water is very soft however water conditioners harden it. Are there conditioners that will not harden the water? plus i keep hearing about 'peat' what is it and pros and cons? please help thanks...

  • gouramis are generally more tolerant of bad water conditions because of the labyrinth organ which allows them to breathe oxygen from the atmosphere. I've also heard that some species can survive quite cool temperatures close to freezing but I wouldn't want to try it...

They won't thrive in poor water conditions, they'll get sick more easily and their colours will be dull so there's little point in keeping them like that.

  • @Luculencia That is true of some gouramis but not these. Chocolate gouramis are very sensitive creatures and wouldn't last two minutes in poor conditions.

  • how easy is it to take care of them and what do they need and can they go with palaties

  • @HEAVYMETALGODS86feb9 They are quite difficult fish to keep over a long period of time. Platies would make very poor tank mates for them.

  • My favorite Gourami. I had the pleasure of keeping 6 over the span of 1 year, then I slowly lost them one by one. They need really soft, pure water. The lower the TDS the better. I used straight RO water.

  • they are really nice.

My favourite gourami is the Pearl gourami. But the chocolate gourami are really nice too!

  • are they harder than powder blue gourami's. i've kept those with little-no problem, how about these?

  • one of the most beautiful fish you can have in a home aquarium.pearl gouramis are also very beautiful but more common.really nice
