Mo Folchart (Fraser) drags his daughter Meggie (Bennet) all around the world completing his skilled work as a 'Book Doctor', otherwise known as a bookbinder. For the last nine years, Mo has been searching antique book stores for a very rare copy of the book 'Inkheart'. That was the last book he read out loud to his wife and daughter, before his wife disappeared. He finally finds a copy and an old enigmatic acquaintance of Mo's named Dustfinger (Bettany), shows up. Mo talks to Dustfinger, and then he begins to distance himself from him by running away. Meggie leaves with Mo without any explaination. They travel to Meggie's Great Aunt Elinor's (Mirren) house to stay, and Meggie finds herself, once again, surrounded by books. (Elinor is rich, and collects rare books. She calls them her children, and has thousands of books in her library).

One night, thugs arrive at the house and kidnap Mo, Meggie, and Elinor and take them to see Capricorn (Serkis), a cruel and evil dictator at his castle.

Meggie soon finds out that Mo is a 'Silvertongue' who has the ability to read characters out of books. The only drawback is that when he brings something out of a story, something must go back in to replace it. This is how Meggie lost her mother, Theresa (Guillory), when she replaced Capricorn, Basta, and Dustfinger, who are all characters from the book 'Inkheart'.

After arriving at Capricorn's castle, all three are locked up by Capricorn who wants Mo to read books that will give him power and riches.

Dustfinger comes to the rescue and smuggles them out with a boy, named Farid (Gavron), who was read out of 'Arabian Nights'.

Now, the group of them must find a way to get another copy of 'Inkheart' to send Capricorn and his thieves back into its pages and return Dustfinger to the home he misses so much. Sending them back into 'Inkheart' will free Mo's wife.
