South Vietnamese troops and US Marines battle to recapture the town of Hue, with bodies being checked for booby traps and civilians caught up in the fighting and leaving. The battle was part of the Tet Offensive.
@Cavykarma Yeah now we should pay our enemies for destroying them. After Vietnam, doesn't look like those Vietnamese want our help does it? Why should we go back in and try to help them if they try to kill us like they are in Afghanistan?
The US Government promised millions to clean up the mess they left, and I have seen first hand that it is still there, polluting land, and has not been shifted. Yet these people are so damn nice to us all!! Its a terrible shame...China could not beat them, neither could France...Yet the US & Australian Governments didn't realise this?...Crazy.....the place is amazing now, except for the tell tale physical signs of war.
@samseal16.....It was a different time in the 60's and 70's...I remember them well. But why invade a tiny place like Vietnam...why not take on Russia? Too hard? I don't blame the countries, I blame the Governement. To invade a country to prove a point is WRONG. So many innocent lives were lost on both sides...and what was gained? Nothing, but heartache. I went to Danang in August. The US Military bases are still poisoned with Dioxin, US Governement needs to clean up...
@Cavykarma true that vietnam is one of the few commie countries today that show no anger towards the west, maybe perhaps they are the first civilization to get communism right. But people in the 60s lived in a different time, the soviet expansion, red scare. The whole point to invading vietnam was to show the soviets that the US is not going to let them build up their allies and arms. A kinda of "we know what your up to" kinda deal
You never hear any trouble coming out of Vietnam, it is one of the mot peaceful countries on earth. Shame on Australian and US Government for sending our boys over there..if the tables were reversed, we would also defend our land too wouldn't we? Considering how at ease the country is now, I guess the Government got it all wrong, at the cost of US, Australian and Vietnamese soldiers..For those who feel bad after being there, I embrace you and feel for you.
Vietnam is now, one of the most beautiful places to visit. The people are SO friendly, they harbour no ill feelings at all. Governments were wrong to sned our boys in to a country who DID NOT invade our country, and were of no threat to us. The Vietnamese claimed back their country, and to this day, the communist side of their country HAS NOT been a single issue. You rarely see any violence there, no protests, the children have the absolute utmost respect for parents too.
God, I was there so many years ago - and thought we were fighting the right fight. It was all so much bull-shit... How can one ever put it from their mind....
