Been there, done that. The mule I rode was named Fred. Off the North Rim, you can ride 5 miles, then the rest of the trail is off limits to stock.

OMG!!! when me and my dad did the north rim ride he got Fred!!! (i got gus)
so this was really funny to us
and they did walk really really really close to the edge!!

GREAT video! I took this trip and it brings back all the terror & exhilaration.
I remember trying to 'hold' my mule away from the edge for the first 1/2 hour, but I finally decided I wasn't going to plunge to my death and just let the mule pick his way.
And this clip shows exactly how NARROW the trail is. Nobody ever believed me when I told them.
