In 1960, Patricia Neary was hand-picked by George Balanchine to be a dancer in New York City Ballet. During the course of her career Mr.B created two roles just for her: Rubies and Variations, and she would perform almost every ballerina role in the Balanchine repetoire. For the first time, Ms. Neary sits down on-camera to talk about her time with Mr. Balanchine. Interview by Lewis Segal.
@mannixisle HEAR HEAR! Finally someone speaks honestly about this. I agree with you 100%. He was a despot. No star could or would ever be allowed to shine more brightly than Mr B. And his thing for very young dancers would have made him very suspect in any other arena.

"working closely with this genius could be difficult ... he was complex, demanding, his actions often ego-fueled. I also found the way he could destroy principal dancers." I'm so tired of the myth of the artist, that because a person is a "genius", he has carte blanche to treat people badly, even destroy them. No, ultimately what matters is how a person treats his fellow man, not whether he has a certain talent or not.
