is there any particular reason for using php/xampp as opposed to regular HTML files? I know php and whatnot, but somehow my XAMPP got corrupted so that i cant uninstall, reinstall, repair, or modify it in any way.

For you guys who don't know how to use a .php file over a localhost, please search for tutorials on how to set up a local server on your machine. You should begin looking for something on learning how to install and use XAMPP, it's not that hard. Alex is actually using XAMPP, you can see this by checking out the white 'X' (it seems a little bone) over a orange background icon at left of the chrome window title 'jQuery Example'.
