How to properly insert a huber needle into a port-a-cath using a sterile technique! A do it yourself guide. :) I am a Cystic Fibrosis, double lung transplant, kidney transplant patient, and I made this video for my friend Meranda who has CF, but it can be helpful to many. I did not wear a mask in this vid for those that are hard of hearing. But please do so when accessing your own or for someone else.

PLEASE wash your hands very well and thoroughly before starting this procedure!

  • Thanks for this video. I am a second time leukaemia patient once when I was five then I have been re-diagnosed about 5 weeks ago. I have already had one port this time round but due to infection they had to remove it and I got it put in my pectoral muscle. It's bait sore right now but it will settle. At some point my dad will have to access my port but this video has made me want to do it myself. Good luck with your treatment.

  • We uses a different needle in Australia, yours looks easier, especially on a two year old!

  • Thank you very much for the valuable information and I hope you feel and get better every day. I just have one humble remark if you allow me so. At 05:40 you pushed air (non sterile air) in the empty sterile syringe then at 05:48 you pushed that non sterile air into the sterile heparin vial. I am not in the medical filed what so ever and I could be wrong but do you think this is an OK (sterile) technique? Best regards.

  • Great video! I also have CF and just received my first port about a month and a half ago. I just started to learn to access myself last Monday. Next Monday I'll have to do it on my own without my nurse watching, so your video is very helpful. Not only for teaching, but also making it look so easy and making me think to myself "I can do this, it's easy!"

  • Thanks so much for making this video. Today is my first time accessing my daughters port. I am a little nervous but your video is making me more confident.

  • Thank you for your video. I know it was directed at Miranda but I found it very informative.

I hope things are going GREAT for you!
