Whitney had a great voice and this was a nice technically flawless performance. The song is one of the most emotional moments in Dreamgirls and if you subtract the emotions Whitney's performance gives you what is left.
Jennifer Holiday made you feel Effie's pain. She had a beautiful voice but she did not just sing she emoted and you felt like you were feeling what Effie felt. Her version still gives me chills every time.
Whitney's version can't compare.
