Salt glazing crosses in a ceramic fibre kiln at Anvil Pottery for a SALT SUNDAY event being held at the Lion Salt Works with the Bishop of Birkenhead on Sunday 17 May 2009.
The kiln is packed with crosses and also with small bowls which need an extra salt firing.
The gas pressure is slowly increased as the temperature rises until maximum pressure is achieved at about 900 degrees centigrade. The bungs were closed at 12.30 to reduce oxygen in the kiln. 3.5 lbs of salt were added to the kiln in opposed charging points over a 45 minute period in eight charges each side. The firing began at 10.45 salt was added at 1200 degrees begining at 13.35. The kiln was soaked at 1200 degrees for 45 minutes then crash cooled. The crosses were removed at 16.30.
