I bought a bunch of them at eBay. They all need some work, there is one FET missing. I did not have a KP303B so I used a BF256C. The FET forms a constant current source that defines the 0-point of the vu meter. I think a BF245 would do also ... The spec sheet says that you need 6.3V AC current for heating of the VFD. I used a 5V DC and it works well. Besides the 5V you need +-15V dc regulated for the opamps and the logic chips. The +15V is also used for anode voltage of the VFD tube.

To all of you who like to know how it works and get some more information on the electronics ... have look at this;

  • Yea and believe it or not it's MADE IN LATVIA in factory called Radiotehnika and originally it works wery slow

  • Thank's for the information! VU-meters need to be slow. There are standards regarding VU meters and how slow the display need to be. That's wy I kept the original electronics ... and because I don't like to throw things away ... ;-)

  • Sweet. I haven't seen a square ceramik disk kapacitor for a long time. :)

    5VDC for the grid should work great. Some VFD's will experience uneven illumination with DC grid voltage.

    But from the vid it simply looks great.

  • Hi, I also did some experiementing with the "naked" display using dc voltage for the filament. And yes, it looks "uneven" if you do.

  • o dear, I have got simmilar vumeter but I don't know how to started it. Can you tell mu how to connect it?? please

  • Thats a strange looking IC chip!

  • what song is that?

  • Interesting falloff and the "staggered" DIL main chip in this one, mine all have the same common 16DIL chips.

    Usually only see these IC's in Master systems, Rockwell modems and old handheld calculator/toy games of the era.

  • this device was used in recorders "Mayak"

  • .....I wanna VU Meter like this........ :)

  • super !!
