  • Hi Don't meen to be critical but your top slide is set wrong, a lot of these lathes have the 0 degrees mark set parallel with the ways therefore when you think you are at 29 degrees you are actually at 61 degrees, this will still cut the thread but you will be effectively be making the valleys of the thread wider and the peaks narrower. You have to position the top slide in the same position as the cross slide which will read 90 degrees on your lathe and count back the 29 degrees.

  • @themetalcutter

    You are correct 100%

  • If you were cutting a very long thread a dial indicator could be quicker

But to be honest i never release the lead screw at all

Multi start threads would be the only exeption

    Regards

    John

  • At 11 minutes it would be really nice to have a description so I know if I want to invest my time in watching the video or not. All the best :)

  • i tried to blow the swarf off the cutting tool :)

  • @themetalcutter i think you are quite right

  • Just to add a final point the trailing edge of your newly formed thread will also have a series of steps in it because the thread is incrementing forwards a fraction everytime you turn the top slide.

  • Just to continue, the top slide should when viewed from the top be just under parallel with the trailing edge of your tip. I myself have a myford super 7 and that is the same as yours, I also have a harrison m300 but that has two marks 90 degrees apart so you can reference from the one on the side instead of the front one. I had to watch your video several times just to confirm to myself how you had it set.

    Regards Tim

ps please feel free to correct me if i am wrong.

  • Hi... Interesting to watch this. One question I have is if you reverse the lathe usingthe inverter control - is there any need for the thread dial indicator? I have an inverter on my Boxford and have been looking for a metric TDI but haven't found one yet.

    Regards OL52
