feeding a baby mourning dove

yumm, yumm, this is soo good I could swim in it! A little baby mourning dove drinking baby bird mix out of a bottle. The dove and pigeon family normally drink out of the mother's crop so this is really quite natural for them to do. The bottle is a pet nurser with a finger cot on the top. It has a very small slit in it for the bird to put his beak into. Then he sucks and swallows. Each time he pushes his beak the liquid comes to his mouth. The liquid should be the consistency of pudding or batter.

How often was it fed? That's the one piece of information that for the life of me, I could not find.

I usually feed them every 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Make sure the crop is empty or close to empty before feeding. The crop is right below the neck. You will see it fill up as you feed.

Kaytee baby bird formula. Get it at the pet bird section in a pet shop.

ensure is not a good diet, they don't drink milk of any kind.

you totally just saved the life of the baby mourning bird I got this morning. I found it under my couch after chasing the cat off of it. As I would love to set it back where it came from I have no idea where that is. So looks like I will rehab it for the next cpl weeks or so. I have been having a time for the last 6 hrs trying to feed it with a syringe. Then I saw this video and the little sucker is fat and happy now. What an idea. Thankyou!

Lillydulac, I am sure you mean well. However while I agree that these little babies should be left to be taken care of by the moms, there are times when a problem occurs. In this case, since I am a rehabber, and have been caring for animals both in zoos, and the wild, this little guy came into my care from a little boy who found it on the street. I educated him to the fact that he should watch before he picks it up. and also explained the facts & that he did a good thing by caring.

These are my favorite local birds. They look so soft and remind me of soap for some reason (dove of course)
