Somehow all the old obviously-synthetic midi patches sound more genuine and engaging than all the obviously-sampled instruments on this version.

Yeah, I agree. Its nice as a just jazz arrangement as it is but does not suit the voodoo theme

Seriously bad mixing on this track. Not only did they muffle the bass, which was what really set the mood in the original, but they also overpowered it with the brass.
