Where Does Water Come From?
We are dependent on our water systems, but how do these systems work? Tour encompasses the Bull Run watershed (the main source of water for Portland), as well as local water supply reservoirs.
Who Cleans Our Water?
Going beyond "flush and forget," this tour examines water sanitation. Stops include Columbia Watershed Treatment Plan, Clean Water Services Durham, Port of Portland Living Machine, and the Big Pipe Project.
How Is News Made?
News is important to public life, but new technologies are causing rapid changes in the industry. Stops include the Oregonian (meet with staff, tour the building, see the printers in action), a visit to a Portland TV station, and discussion with local experts on new media.
Where Does Garbage Go?
Although plenty of Portlanders are proud of how "green" their city is, not many know what happens to our waste and recycling. Tour stops include the Metro transfer station, a material recovery facility, a landfill and hauler lot.
Where Does Mail Go?
Despite a struggling economy and rising fuel prices, the United States Post Office continues to deliver our mail day in and day out. Tour includes the Downtown branch, a postal route, and a behind-the-scenes look at one of the country's oldest federal agencies.
How Does the City Transport its Public?
Public transportation is a vital part of the city's infrastructure. Tour will stop at various bus, streetcar, and rail stations. It will also visit the Trimet Office in Pioneer Square, the Metro Office, and will meet with a range of officials and activists involved with public transit.
How Is the City Designed?
A tour highlighting various examples of Portland architecture, with a special focus on green/ sustainable design. Tour includes stops to LEED certified buildings, Zimmer Gunsul Frasca offices, the Portland Building, as well as meetings with guest expert architects and designers.
How Is the City Governed?
This tour aims to equip participants with the essentials of civic engagement. We will visit with staff at City Hall, examine the pros and cons of the commissioner system, and learn about the functions of the five departments. We will also visit a Multnomah County Elections office for a tour and overview of the voting process.
How Is Justice Served?
Focusing on the criminal justice system, this tour visits police headquarters and jail, a 911 dispatch center, and city and federal courthouse buildings. Possible guests include Portland Copwatch and/or Phoenix Rising Transitions, a program that helps ex-convicts obtain jobs.
How Is the City Planned?
Portland is known worldwide as a city at the forefront of urban planning, but what does that mean? Tour includes notable sites of past and present urban design, as well as a visit to the Portland Development Commission and the City of Portland's Office of Sustainability.
How Do Railroads Work?
Portland has many railroads, but where do they go and how do they operate? Tour will cover the history of railroads in the city, how they currently operate, what goods are transported on the lines, as well as a talk by railroad consultants from the Port of Portland.
How Does the Harbor Work?
Learn about Portland's docks, bridges, and terminals and get a new perspective on the city's waterfront industry. Tour will include a jetboat excursion down the Willamette, shipping at the Port of Portland, and special guests TBD.
