Monica Aspelund performing "Lapponia", the Finnish entry at the 1977 Eurovision Song Contest.

One of Finland's most wonderful and underrated entries (and heaven knows they have quite a few!) and certainly the most unusual song in that year's contest, this is a song that beautifully combines the fairytale element of the lyrics (it talks about a mythological witch) with a "Nordic jazz" ambience in the melody and the arrangement, all perfectly helped by Monica Aspelund's excellent performance (right up to the high-pitched note at the song's climax!).

Note that this wasn't the Aspelund family's only forray at the contest: in 1983, Monica's sister, Ami, would represent Finland with "Fantasiaa", also a wonderful entry itself.

  • @pratt68 dont forget Germany did that with their group Silver Connection with the song, Telegram to my Baby also sung in english

  • She and Fredi are my favorite Finnish singers.........now she lives in West Palm Beach, Florida :)

  • So glad Finland finally won in 2006 - but in my opinion this song would have deserved it more,..

  • Germany also were allowed to sing in English, because they had chosen their entry early on. But this song is so good, that it shouldn't even have matterered, that it was sung in Finnish. But alas, Finland never has had much luck in this contest.

  • great voice

  • Ihsn perseeestä.

  • A great song that fell foul of the 'native language only' rule re-introduced in 1977. It would have finished even higher had it been sung in English. Belgium managed to escape it that year due to having already chosen their entry when the rule was brought in.

  • The best song in eurovision 1977

  • I think i just went deaf....thanks! LOL
