@redrust422 i map for css etc using hammer, well at least i used to. Only make a map with an idea/theme that you think and will be interesting. For instance a crashed helicopter, build your map on this theme and expand around that central point until you have a good basic layout. Then finally work on detail
well you get two kinds of maps, symmetrical, and a-symmetrical. Each has its use and its degree of balance. The first stage being throwing up all the hints and caulk etc where everything should go so its balanced, then fill it all in with art and decals. Thats the way professionals map builders do it, and its the easiest way. Tool brushes can always be removed at a later time as you go along, but things that are designed to be there for a purpose of cause are not removed.
Map makers are an odd lot, the more professional you get the more you want to redo the way you put it together and you become critical of your own work, this is an example of the best way to go about making your maps, the idea is to make it balanced and fair map for team games as well as natural and cool at the same time. So the best way is to layout the map starting with how gameplay plays out then fill in the rest with decoration.
