The photonics group has led the way in developing photonic crystal fibres, pioneered by Professor Philip Russell in 1991 and now a major new area within physics. These optical fibres are able to harness the power of light in many new ways, enhancing existing applications and leading to many new ones. The work is expected to have a major impact in many areas of engineering and technology, including light sources, optical telecommunications, ultra-violet light and x-ray generation, atomic and quantum physics and astronomical imaging.

  • nice collection of photos..

  • I'm there now and I can say Tim Birks is a fantastic professor! Not met Jonathan Knight though.

  • w0w amazing this was cool

  • Does this department work with electrical engineering?

    Is this waveguide technology improvements?

I Love the use of the word "pioneer"

Human's natural sensors, make this seem more obvious than other things we've discovered.

  • exelente ! gracias,desde aregentina.

  • Information processing could be vastly excellerated and also multiple task actions could finally be realised for computers rather than being machines lacking the ability to sustain multi-tasking over vast time and the amount of actions ask of it. I heard a similiar project using diamonds to control and reflect light to desire locations beside the use of fibre optics. Just think how fast or better yet needless CPU's would become if this technology was fully realised!? We could create new systems!

  • w0w that was totally amazing!!!

prof johnathan knight is my dad XD =]

vote PL0X compulsory (make sure 5 star

  • wow rufus' dad pioneered it
