Many scenes in the Hal Roach comedies were shot on the streets of Culver City, California. The brilliant designer and pop culture historian Piet Schreuders creates a computer model of Culver City as it looked in the 20's - and matches-in scenes from Laurel and Hardy comedies that were shot on site. From a Dutch documentary I wish they'd subtitle and release on DVD! You CAN get the Schreuders co-produced DVD of "The Beau Hunks Orchestra Live at The Conertgebouw" DVD from Basta (if you don't already have it!) -- check out http://tinyurl.com/2hj88q

  • This is brilliant and amazing !I too lived in Culver City for many years and would always try to spot places that I had seen in the Hal Roach comedies. Much is lost but there are still remnants . In the old films you can often see how much open space there was around. Culver city was quite a drive from Los Angeles and almost as far from Hollywood.A fine little town!

  • Much more information in the print article: See clip description for article address.

  • Absolutely fascinating. Keep in mind, while much of Laurel & Hardy/Hal Roach Culver City is "gone", some of it remains. And a trip to Culver City, to stand where some of the greatest comedy was made, is still a thrill. I went on a tour of many of the L& H locations about 10 years ago and it was fascinating to see locations and homes (and those famous steps) still standing, in many cases. I was also fortunate to have met Stan Laurel a few times at his apartment in Santa Monica. ...Rowby

  • that was really amazing and very intresting-its good how that comedy is still alive and funny even today

  • I grew up in CC and have fond memories of the Pet Dinette and the Magic Shop.

  • Great work! Thank you!

  • Thank you Piet for producing this excellent video. I know it must have been a lot of work and L&H fans appreciate this look into the past.

Bridging Culver City then and now. I wish I had produced this video. I'll show it to my local Sons of the Desert members.

  • Wat een fantastisch onderzoek! Als L+H liefhebber is dit werkelijk GENIETEN! Prachtig om onder andere de locaties van Leave 'M Laughing en Putting Pants on Philip op deze drie dimensionale manier te bekijken! Great job done by a Dutch man!
