I don't think it's that people in hollywood can't wrap their head around it, but it's all about created a good and interesting story that will appeal to the public. You need romance, drama, and tradegy, so that's what the writer and director did.

There's something about his speech which just screams in-denial.

I know he's awkward but he keeps trying to dodge the question or skirt the border with it. I wouldn't be surprised if the movie was actually pretty accurate, Aside from the romance and threats etc.
