Extreme Machines is dedicated to finding out how machines work.
This program focuses on the fastest, largest, and tallest trains. We take a brief look at the steam era -- at the Mallard and the huge Big Boys of the Union Pacific railways and a more detailed look at the trains of today -- in particular the French TGV with its top speed of 320 mph. We investigate breaking systems, on-board computer systems and the latest in hi-tech tracks. We show some of the spectacular train crashes and disasters across time and take the audience on a time-lapse trip from London to Paris. Finally, we look at plans for the future with NASA's Maglifter concept -- a launch lift for tomorrow's space train.

  • @7:35--the 3985's just waitin for the clearance to get up to track speed. I have to see this one and #844 in person someday.

  • @trainmanauxl1 I think Mallard more likely hit 125.6 mph, but there's no doubt she's the fastest engine in the world.

  • @TrainMaster24 Who wouldn't? I'd want a cab ride in that one.

  • I would love to ride on the front of the Challenger.

  • @southparkline1 only the big ones are the Challenger was one of the big ones today it is #3985 on rails the others are in museums of scraped.

  • @geomodelrailroader Never heard a steam locomotive referred to as a he, usually they are referred to as she but whatever floats your boat. ;)

  • the historical incorectness in this video angers me

  • man there are SO MANY historical mistakes in this:for example, there are 2 surviving challengers 3985 & 3977, 3977 is rumored to be in operatinal condition. there are 8 surrviving Big Boys. And Mallard hit 126 not 125 aas the last video says was its top speed.

  • 3:34 the Big Boys were the kings of the rails they climbed Blue Ridge in Oregon ,Sherman Hill in Wyoming and Utah, and Donner Pass in California. but when the Big Boys retired only their little brother remained 5:07 meet #3985 the last Challenger. owned by UP #3985 is the last of the giants and he is still pulling freight and passengers today as part of the UP Steam Team in 2010 he pulled the same train he pulled in the 40s when he was built Ringling Blue for RBBX
