Crumb structured his cantata "Star Child" after this piece...

Definitely sparks the imagination!

I find this piece endlessly fascinating. I wish more contemporary orchestras would put Ives on the program. His music is unique and was way,way ahead of it's time.

Delizioso. Bella mossa !!

Neat. I never heard of this guy until a few weeks ago. I'm loving his stuff.

This has to be my favorite of Ives. There are many ways one can interpret meaning. To me the strings resemble the unresolved unconscious conflicts. The piano and other instruments resemble the conscious attempt to resolve these conflicts and irrationalities. As hard as the piano and other instruments attempt to drown out the unconscious conflicts and irrationalities, they will always remain hardwired.
@normalcomputerable Or maybe it's just about Central Park in the dark...

Notice that at :52 Ives switches from chords w/ prominent major 7ths & minor 2nds to a more open sound, w/ 4ths, 5ths, minor 7ths/major 2nds to the fore; then back to original chords; at 1:55 switches to the more open, less dissonant sound, at 2:08 back to the more dissonant, at 2:20 to more open, at 2:39 back to full dissonance, etc.--back & forth. Remarkably, he anticipates by >/= 25 years Bartok's mysterious string chords in mvt 2 of pno cto 2, long one of my favorite mvts in all music.
