This game is easier than people think.

You just need to know a few things:

1. Hold forward when you kick to conserve your supply of Crane kicks
2. Do well on the bonus stages
3. Get as many Drum punches and Crane kicks as possible for Rounds 3 and 4
4. Don't use regular punches

Stage 1 - Karate Tournament:
You've only got 4 Crane kicks but you don't really need them. Just hold forward when you kick. Get your timing down and these guys fall quickly. Don't even bother with punches.

Stage 2 - Daniel-San in Okinawa:
These enemies only require one hit to be taken down. Keep holding forward with your kicks and make sure to collect the Crane kick symbols. Find the bonus stages and do as well as possible in each of them. Be careful whenever you see holes in the floor. Enemies come 2 at a time so take them out right before you jump if you need to.

Stage 3 - The Typhoon Strikes:
The wind pushes you back a bit at this stage so you need to be even more careful with your jumps. The birds and sticks don't take off any of your health. They're a pain in the ass, though. Kick them, jump over them, and duck them whenever you can. Having plenty of Crane kicks is a big help at this stage. You don't actually have to defeat the boss at the end. You just need to get to the little girl up on the pole.

Stage 4 - Last Fight Against Chozen:
Ok, this stage is tough. The enemies here throw boulders at you and some of them carry harpoons. This is where your, hopefully, hearty supply of Crane kicks and Drum punches come in handy. When you are going uphill, use the Drum punches. When you are going downhill, use the Crane kicks. If you are on level ground with the enemy, then I would use regular kicks or Crane kicks. I miss a bonus stage at the 6:44 mark but I was worried about keeping this run under 10 minutes. The reason I avoid fighting the final two enemies at the 8:52 mark is because I don't want any of them waiting for me on my final jump into the pit with Chozen. Believe me, I've been hit into the water a few times before I figured that out. Take advantage of the fact that the game doesn't let more than 2 enemies on the screen at one time. Stay on the far left side of the pit when you fight Chozen so that the girl doesn't fall into the water. You'll see her get knocked back when Chozen first enters the fight. Drum punches or Crane kicks will take him down quickly. Just don't let him hit you or it's ciudad de agua.

Bonus Stages:

Ice Block Break - Very easy. Just press a button when the meter is at its fullest.

Chopsticks Fly Catch - This one is also easy. Just make sure you concentrate on one fly in particular at a time.

Swinging Hammer - Not as tough as it looks. Notice that the hammer speeds up with each two swings. There are 3 different speeds. The first two are a relatively slow speed, the second two are faster, and the final two are the fastest. So you only have to change your reaction time after the second and fourth swings.

Some notes:
-Played on a FCEUX emulator
-No cheats or savestates were used
-Played at full speed

  • Eventhough it says "The Karate Kid" in the game. The story is from the second movie. Though, it does deserve more stages like the city and the dance club would be good suggestions.

  • For some reason, after I first saw this game, I admired and knew there was something special about it. That was way back in 1986-87. Now after 25 years and seeing this video, you proved that my intuition was right. Thanks to the maker(s) of this game, thanks to Nintendo, Thanks to YouTube, and most of all, thanks to you BubuFubu for posting this. Keep up the good work.

  • I didn't play this game a ton as a kid, but I remember that trying to catch mosquitoes with chopsticks was hard as hell. This guy didn't miss a single one.

  • Recycled levels and challenges didn't bother me a a kid but now I'm getting pissed watching you play though them.

  • ugh I still get tightness in my chest just watching that typhoon level. First game I actually beat as a kid. the ending was underwhelming, i can't say I felt all that fulfilled, but I figured if I could beat this I can beat anything; sure enough I started racking up the completions on games I couldn't beat before like Punchout, Super Mario 2, Wizards and Warriors and Castlevania. Spy Hunter broke my streak - freaking game has no end

  • damn dude. you have my respect. i usually felt good if i did it in under an hour.

  • you are the man :)

  • Are they throwing cabbage at you?

    @2:11 YOU MISSED A "C" GOOD JOB

  • God run. But my god that has to be the WORST end to a video game ever. Did the developers even see the film!!!!

  • that there, is a satisfying ending.
