To all the critic I say, "horse feathers"! Hofmann approved of the reproduceing piano technology of the period and even invented a device to enhance the accuracy of the recording from the artist. Unfortunatly, the reproducing piano was on it's way out of favor by that time.

Just great! Great interpretation.

Everyone is saying its a piano roll..and that its "awful" , at least its better than poor old Rachmaninoff's roll of this prelude..which is so slow that its uneven!
Personally this must be one of the finest piano rolls of its time, but we must remember, the speed the piece is played in and other aspects are up to the technician.
While this piece is supposed to represent proud and imperialistic Russia, its not supposed to have a "sensible touch" its supposed to be loud and proud!

They record piano rolls from the composer playing the piano I think...

this one just sounds so right...
never a fan of hoffman but this one is simply awesome

He mixed with Rachmaninov , and Rachmaninov approved his interpretations, so who are we to judge. (Think the 3rd PC is dedicated to hofmann?)
BTW, Rachmaninov also recorded his own music. go listen to them and tell us how emotionless he is playing his own music, so that I can have a laugh.

playing of the first order. Bravo! TY.

Hello!!! This is terrible and not a artistic representative of a human, much less Josef Hofmann. All piano rolls are awful whether they are duo-art or the welte-mignon. They are all dry and distorted rhythmically.

This is from a piano roll.

Wow! Amazing interpretation by josef Hofmann! Very original and beautifully played. Something much more rarely heard today than 85 years ago, I should think. By the way, excellent sound quality for 1923 recording. Thanks for sharing this treasure, my friend!
