  • Hey dude, you need a MUCH bigger topload, that's why you're only getting small breakout... Also, try adjusting the coupling.

If you want only one streamer you need a high break rate from your spark gap, so decreasing your cap to about 5nF (if you have enough turns on your primary) will encourage this.

I get fat, 16" streamers from my 2"x12" coil on a 10Kv 23mA supply... I have my gap set to a total of about 5-8 mm for max performance.

  • Thanks for the information. I'll give it a try when my new setup is complete. I know that old topload is really bad, but it was all I could make at the time. I tried using the metal tape to make the topload smooth, but it wasn't working at all. I'm going to use that 12" sphere I made, along with a new toriod that it will sit on. Should add a lot more capacitance.

  • well you have it very close to resonance but with your setup you can get more out of it.keep trying!

  • It should make longer streamer lengths, but with that topload I doubt I could get predicted maximum lengths of two feet. Too many sharp edges on the topload to create a single breakout streamer. I made a new 12" sphere topload that is very smooth. Have yet to try it out, because the old setup is torn down. Maybe I can get one of those awsome "floating" single streamers with the new topload.

  • try to coat it cleanly with tinfoil to smooth the topload, never tried it but it seems like itll work out!

  • I might try it out, but I'm planning on just making a new toriod topload.

  • yeah true...

  • I added an old fan to the setup to cool down all the components and add some quenching to the gap. It was working fine until I ran full power. Right when I turned on the coil the fan blades, made of plastic, broke into several pieces. Not sure if this was just by chance or the coil caused it, but the fan is ruined. Standing three feet away from the coil, full power, I can draw quarter inch streamers off of any metal object. The small streamer is still powerful enough to burn.
