Australia's immigration system is often held up as a model for Europe. But what really went on at the notorious Woomera detention camp?
"I saw so many people break down to a level that you would find hard to believe," confides camp doctor Simon Lockwood. There were numerous suicide attempts and incidents of self harm. Staff were affected by the inmates' trauma and also suffered from depression.

@zzsharka Signed a quota? No I don't think so. The Aust public is being held to ransom by documents signed in the 1950s and by politicians who are not heeding what the majority want.

@zzsharka We signed? Who is we? because I certainly didnt sign it. Did you? I doubt it. Our government is corrupt and out of tune with the public. I am not saying the majority agree with me, all I am saying is that they dont hear or listen to the peoples voice. And they try to controll the public through media, heck they even want to censor our internet. That is a violation of privacy. No I dont have anything to hide but if I want the government to know what I am doing I will tell them.

@zzsharka hehehe you obviouslt havnt viewed my profile. I have been living in Europe for the last 8 months and have also back packed through Vietnam for 1 month. So I think I am pretty well rounded. I am also only 18 and so far have only had a zippo lighter stolen from me and that was in Vietnam. And yes we do have one of the highest crime rates in the world and one of the fastest rising crime rates in the world.

@tequese We have one of the lowest poverty rates in the world. We signed the refugee quota so we can't blame others for coming here out of desperation, if we didn't want them then shouldn't have signed the quota. Puting in "concentration camps" is just cruel.

@tequese No we don't have one of the highest crime rates in the world, have you ever been out of Australia ? Even in Paris France you can't walk around with an Ipod without being worried that it's gonna be taken unless you look mean. Our crime is rising because our police & courts are one of the softest in the world, people are getting 5 yrs for rape after courts keep reducing sentences ! & teenagers get a slap on the wrist when they commit crimes.

@zzsharka You think we dont have problems? We have one of the highest crime rates in the world! And you know what, the crime is rising! Sure if I had the power to get our troops back I would, but incase you didnt realise the government didnt listen to the people when we didnt want to get involved in the war did they. And I think you mean NATO or the "allied" forces. I dont know where in Australia you live but its pretty obvious you havnt been to an old country town or aboriginal camp.
