Open questions are being regarded as the sacres cow of communication skills. For the questioner they feel good. But what if you are at the receiving end? In this animation Arnold Blits explains you why open questions do NOT help to create or deepen relationships.

Yes, I hate it when people ask me open questions all the time. Especially when we do not have a real relationship, it feels like being interrogated. So,I give social answers and nothing more. But most people accept any response you give, no matter how superficial.

I like asking open questions. But after seeing this video of Arnold Blits I start wondering if I really get the best information...... And if I can't ask open questions, what can I do instead? Mr. Arnold Blits, do you have an answer for me?

Very often I get sales people at my desk. They all learned to ask open questions and then listen to the client. It is so true what Arnold Blits states in this great video. When you ask open questions you feel professional. But it's easy and without any risk from the questioner. But when you have to answer these questions, you have to think, to work. When I meet people who are playing their 'open question' game, I only give them superficial information. Often they don't even notice!
