  • Oops. Soon as I read that saw I screwed up the dates. Should be 1935 & 1936. Must have been thinking of Sinatra's decca recording...

  • By the way, the song won the Oscar in 1943 for Best Original Song.

  • @RealtorJohnnyL. I'm not saying that his version is bad. What I am saying is that Sinatra's version isn't as true to the original intent of the composer or lyrisist. The song was never written to be a "jazz standard", rather like most of what we now call "jazz standards" it was written for a musical. The 1942 movie Swing Time where it was performed, quite simply, by Fred Astare sitting at alone piano as Ginger Rogers washes her hair in the next room. Sinatra's version isn't my favorite...

  • @RealtorJohnnyL Check out: movie, "Swing Time", with Fred Astaire.

  • @JamesToupin Because he should have, and it is so appropriate. Just try to feel this version. Don't compare it,if you can,to Peters' ,which I am going to check out, and I'm sure it's incredible, because,I agree w/ you,it is one of the greatest ballads of all time. This song is so great, that it prob. could be played by a symph. orchestra,in a classical era style,or any other way & be Great! By the way, It was meant to be a jazz "ballad",as,that is the way it was 1st performed, sung & danced to.

  • @pandorabangles I am completely enamored with Judy Garland, so don't get me wrong, but did you ever hear Bette Midler sing a ballad?!!! Try truly listening to her. She's a pretty great talent, maybe, not J.G., but I place her a lot higher than,I think, You do.

  • @InHearse13 a pretty good chance, I'm afraid.

  • Very strange, what's the big deal? If you said Judy or Frank, you'd get a ton of visitors, either way. If you were trying to do something nice for people ,or to be creative, then thanks,I guess. Otherwise...annoying. Very annoying. Leave the unaccountable stuff to our governments.

  • Why does Frank have to "swing" one of the greatest ballads of all time? See Bernadette Peters singing this song if you want to hear how it should be performed.

  • where is the part where Judy Garland sings the song, as you imply in the title?
