From Cheap Trick's legendary debut album entitled simply "Cheap Trick". This was their first official single. "Oh Candy" was written by Rick Nielsen as was most of their early material. The title came from a photographer the band knew in it's early days. The gentleman's name was Marshall Mintz and they affectionately called him "Candy", and he commited suicide in the mid 70's.

Oh Candy by Rick Nielsen
Oh candy why did you do it
You should've called me on the telephone
I didn't expect for you call me'cause I didn't think that you were alone
So alone Oh, candy worked so hard At doin' what he thought was right
It really really doesn't mean a thing
Oh, candy worked so hard At doin' what he thought was right
It really really doesn't mean a thing
Oh candy why did you do it
You didn't stick a needle in your vein
You just got so damned depressed
We all liked you except yourself
Oh, candy worked so hard
At doin' what he thought was right
It really really doesn't mean a thing
Oh, candy worked so hard
At doin' what he thought was right
It really really doesn't mean a thing
You, you won't be comin' around no more
You, you won't be comin' around no more
Oh candy why did you do itI didn't think you heard a word that I said....

  • hmmm..so again, let me answer a few of your q's...Marshall Mintz aka: Candy aka: my dad, was their very 1st photographer , and good friend in Rockford, Illinois...he was seperated from my mom, and was having quite a difficult time with that; he majorly struggled with severe depression...he hung hisself in his apartment on sept. 6th, 1975..it was a shock to the entire community that knew him..he was utterly talented, and an amazing guy !

    sincerely,

    H. Mintz

  • @helenebock My thoughts & prayers go out to you H. Mintz.

  • @flippyflyer you know what, they're all too GOOD for that joke in cleveland. what honor is it to be considered as good as madonna?

  • @BobKruithof With great respect matey we all get them everytime they tour.

He comes around with a bucket of them sometimes post gig. ;-)

  • They did let Jack Douglas produce another album; its called 'STANDING ON THE EDGE' and it came out in 1985. Also, Jack worked with them on their 2006 effort 'ROCKFORD' he's always very inolved with Cheap Trick either with hands on production or advise. He also engineered 'AT BUDOKAN'. Discovered them in '76 in a bowling alley in Waukegan Wisconsin....

Cheap Trick: The Worlds Greatest Power Pop Band!!

  • This is one of the best pop songs ever written. I would say this song and "So Good To See You" are the two best CT songs never to receive much acclaim.

  • As far as I know Marc Bolan has not been inducted yet. Bolan was and is the king of glam with a flair for writing lyrics that Dylan would approve of . He should have been inducted first along with Eddie Cochran and Elvis. All Marc did before he died at 30 was re-invent rock which became punk and then grunge....so if he's in the RRHOF he deserves it. As far as Cheap Trick goes....I love them.

  • Harmonies!! Lord could those guys harmonize!

  • I was JUST thinking about this song at work and driving myself crazy cuz I couldn't remember how it started!
