The Nilagiri Passenger, the connecting train for the Chennai-Mettupalayam Nilagiri Express, chugs into Coonoor en route toward Udhagamandalam.
The steam engine # X-37392, built in 1949 by the Schweizerische Lokomotiv und Maschinenfabrick (SLM), Winterthur, Switzerland, with wheel arrangement 0-8-2T, shoves the carriages uphill from the rear of the formation near the railway level crossing at Coonoor, soon after leaving the steep rack-section of the track.
V.M.Govind Krishnan's book: "NMR [Nilgiri Mountain Railway]-From Lifeline to Oblivion", documents the efforts of the public to thwart the moves of the Indian government to dismantle this unique railway, and keep it in running condition.
