As part of the Race, Frankly series, Beacon reporter Kristen Hare talked to audience members at the Missouri History Museum who saw "Traces of the Trade" a movie about one woman tracing her family history to find her ancestors and their involvement with the slave trade in early U.S. history. We study history that we may learn from the past, not to blame -- or credit -- living people for the deeds of those long dead. You are responsible what for YOU are doing to make the world a better (or worse) place -- the deeds of others should make you neither ashamed nor proud, no matter how close to you in your family tree. Until we learn to view historical events in this context, we will continue to miss the full potential history has to give us perspective to solve contemporary problems.
